This oil painting was an exercise in colour. The background and foreground being complementary colours and most of the other colour is a mix from those two.
I don't think it was a great painting, just a bit of fun. As is often the way, the preliminary drawing had a lot more going for it. Preliminary work often captures something loose and more expressive that gets worked out of the more considered final product.
It was painted in 1987 at Balcome, Mount Martha near Melbourne, Australia.
By the way, the shoes are the old Clark Trek gear that used to be worn in NZ a lot. I liked the sand coloured suede ones best. Went through several pairs. They had this big external seam down the top and centre. They had a kind of post-sixties, I'm-a-hippy feel about them.
